Ladies
& Girls Teams Mission
Tavistock Girls’ RFC
Tavistock girls was first
formed in early October 2005 due to the fact that one of our girls had
been playing contact rugby for 3 years previously for the mixed team
but was told she couldn’t continue playing for them after the age of
12. She was keen to keep playing and so asked around a few girls to see
if they would be interested in playing contact rugby. It turned out
that quite a few girls wanted to play and so Mhairi McCall decided to
start up a team. Leaflets and flyers were posted and handed out in and
around Tavistock advertising the first training session for Tavistock
Girls. Mhairi was pleasantly surprised when 24 girls turned up to the
first ever training session.
It wasn’t long before it was obvious that these girls wanted to play
matches and not just train so the hunt for other girls clubs began.
Although we are the only girls team in West Devon, it was not long
before we discovered that there are many other girls clubs around in
Devon and Cornwall.
The team has been going from strength to strength since then and now
are one of the best teams in the county, beating every girls team in
Devon in our last season. 9 girls represented Devon county last year,
defeating the Cornish, twice, one match was even held at TRFC. 8 of
those Girls then represented the South West at the National Festival
held at Rugby School.
Since the club first started in 2005 we have developed two teams, the
under 15’s and the under 18’s and so there is a variety of ages in our
club. We hope to continue growing stronger and would welcome any
newcomers to our side.
Kirsty McCall
has been selected for Scotland Under 18 Development Squad. She attended
trials at Murrayfield on 28 September. Kirsty is loosehead prop,
sometimes number 8. She played for Devon and South West South last
season.
November 20th :
further news.
Kirsty attended trials at Murrayfield on 28 September and was selected
to attend a training camp at Rosyth on 3rd and 4th November. From this
she was further selected to be part of the SWRU U18 Development Squad
2007/2008.
Kirsty first started playing rugby at Tavistock Rugby Club when she was
10. At that time she played mixed rugby but this is only allowed up to
U12 level. She didn't play for a year then Joe Flynn, Headteacher at
Tavistock Community Primary School, told her of Girls' under 14 trials
which were happening in Cullompton on 1 Otober 2005. Kirsty attended
these trials and was selected, providing she played for a club. I,
therefore, started a girls' section at Tavistock Rugby Club. We have
two squads, Under 15 and U18. Altogether we have 25 girls who regularly
attend training and play in matches at lease once a month, usually
more. We had 11 girls play for county last season and 9 went on to be
selected for South West South. This year, for various reasons, the
U18's are short of players and would like to invite girls between the
age of 15 and 18 to join them. ( College years 11-13) .
