Chairman’s Post-Easter Message
At the beginning of March we held a very
successful Sponsors Dinner and Vice Presidents Lunch at Sandy Park.
Both events were well attended and a number of you have written to say
how much you enjoyed the event, with strong recommendations to repeat
them in the same form next year with perhaps the Sponsors Dinner to
kickoff the season and the V.P. Lunch sometime towards the end.
In all 22 of our sponsors attended the events and 48 of our V.Ps and
together with their guest they made up a total in excess of 100 for the
two days. At the Friday dinner there were a few impromptu speeches from
yours truly and Steve Rush and we were fortunate in having the Plymouth
Albion stand-off half, Ross Laidlaw as a guest who gave us a short in-
sight into his progress from junior player in a club not dissimilar to
one like ours, thru’ to Premiership Worcester RFC before joining the
Plymouth side last season. As always good fayre was provided by Lisa
and her girls from Dukes.
As we approach the end of the season with just one month to go it’s
time to reflect on what has, and what could have been. Ideally this
year was to be our promotion year, but some hiccoughs during the season
and the usual injury demon has curtailed our inspirations. However we
are still lying third and statistically could still be in the running.
Many of you may have seen some bad press we received recently when a
match between our 2nd XV and O.P.O.s had to be abandoned as a result of
some disrespectful behaviour towards the referee. Tavistock Rugby Club
will not tolerate this sort of indiscipline and has written to all
playing members pointing out that if they resort to such behaviour in
future they will not be welcome as Club members. We have been put on
“probation” for the next 12 months and should any similar behaviour
arise in that time we will have 10 league points deducted from our
total. This could mean the difference between promotion and demotion.
On a brighter note, the annual tour takes place this year in May and
all members are welcome. Colts are also invited and they will be
chaperoned by those of more seasoned years who know a thing or two
about such traditions.
