Welcome from Chairman of Junior Section

I'd like to welcome everyone to the 2009 - 10 season at Tavistock Rugby club, a season which should see the club take a significant step forward when it is awarded the RFU's Seal of Approval. This accreditation recognises the effort and achievement the club has made to maintain and improve on the required standard and provision of quality rugby union experiences for young players.

Preparing the way for the Seal of Approval has required a 'root and branch' review of all our procedures and practices including Safeguarding, coaching qualifications, ensuring all age groups are included in appropriate social events at the club, not overplaying players -- to name but a few.

Perhaps one of the most important requirements of the Seal of Approval is the need to develop formal links with local schools. At Junior level (U 13s to U 16s) the club draws players from five secondary schools and now has in place written agreements with both Kelly College and Tavistock College.

Last season I was able to report that numbers of players had risen to 207. This season we expect to pass the 250 mark and between them these players will be participating in over 210 fixtures arranged against 15 Devon and 5 Cornish clubs.

All the work put in to make the club the success it is, is carried out by volunteers and we are always on the lookout for more. This season we have appointed a Volunteer Coordinator -- Mandy Luffman -- who will be out and about actively encouraging people to give a bit of their time and effort to help run different activities within the club. This could include anything from managing your son or daughter's squad, to arranging a tour, to helping run a social event. So, if you've ever thought about getting involved -- now is the time!

Finally, I would just like to thank everyone for making the club the great place it is -- the coaches, managers, committee members, volunteers, caterers, parent's, supporters and most of all the players -- and hope you all have great success and enjoyment throughout the coming season.
