Tavistock 69 : Saltash 0

Following on from the emphatic win against OPMs 2nd team the previous week, Tavistock 2nds ran in eleven tries for the second game running.

Tavistock were able to field a strong squad, including three brothers - Colin; Sam and Andrew Smerdon - who all played in the backs and who all figured on the scoresheet. With the exception of the lineout, which was a bit messy all afternoon, the Tavistock forwards steadily took control in all departments. There were major contributions from Simon Palisio and Robert Joines in the back row and young props Jason Ward and Rory Gilroy played their part in the domination of the set scrums.

Saltash were competitative throughout the first half and they had several opportunities to score through their pacy backs, but poor passing or handling errors let them down. Tavistock opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a try from Simon Palisio and added a second soon after from lock James Bruna. Two more tries came before halftime from winger Phil Allen and a second for Palisio. All four tries were converted by Andrew Smerdon, to give a half time score of 28 - 0.

The second half was increasingly dominated by Tavistock, who were able to field a number of substitutes, in the very hot conditions. Seven further tries were scored, all from good build up work from the whole team. The try scorers were Robert Joines (2); Ben Palmer (2); Sam Smerdon;Colin Smerdon and Nick Lane. Andrew Smerdon added three more conversions to bring the final score to 69 - 0.

Although some work needs to be done on the lineout, it was another very promising and entertaining display by the 2nds.

Next week the 2nds are away to Torquay 3rds in a merit league game.
