Bideford 21 : Tavistock 12
For the fifth match in a row, Tavistock 2nds found themselves on the road. Their latest trip being to Bideford in a Merit League match. Both sides served up a good competitive match and the result was in the balance right up until the last few minutes. Not for the first time, Tavistock were slow into their stride, which allowed the strong Bideford forwards to dominate both the set scrums and much of the play in the loose. The home side took the lead with a penalty after 8 minutes. Tavistock could not get much possession and found themselves defending for long periods, but they refused to buckle and despite enjoying most of the attacking play, Bideford could only add a second penalty goal to lead 6 - 0 at half-time. The second half started, again with Tavistock unable to get any phases of play going. Five minutes into the half, Bideford disrupted a scrum near the Tavistock line and their impressive number 8 scored an opportunist try. Four minutes later and more confusion in the Tavistock midfield presented the home team with another scoring opportunity, which they accepted. This try was converted and Tavistock found themselves trailing 18 - 0. Tavistock then started to assert themselves and with the forwards now getting on top in the scrums and making some good gains in the loose play, it was Bideford's turn to do some defending. After 62 minutes, Tavistock pressure eventually brought a try to young prop Ed Kivell, who was up in support of a series of drives from the forwards and jinked his way over the line. The conversion missed, but Tavistock had their tails up and continued to enjoy good periods of pressure. Six minutes from time, Tavistock halted a Bideford attack on the edge of their own 22 and a fine counter attack with the ball passing through several pairs of hands, ended with centre Ryan James beating several defenders in a fine run before passing to fullback Ian Gray who was up in support.Gray completed the move with a fine try under the posts. Scrumhalf Rob Milligan added the conversion, to bring the score to 18 - 12. Tavistock were now sensing victory and continued to press, but just before the end of the match, conceded a penalty in their own half and the Bideford fullback kicked the 3 points, which made the game safe for the home team. Darren Cole, who came on as a replacement in the second half, was influential in his first appearance of the season. Ian Gray at fullback; Ryan James in the centre and winger Charlie Harvey were prominent. Darren Sutton won some good lineout ball and while the team were slow to get to grips with the lively home team, the whole side gave a fine defensive display in the first half and but for the two lapses in concentration early in the second half, could well have come away with victory. Next week, another away trip, this time to Teignmouth.
