Honiton 17 :Tavistock 17
Tavistock made a good start to their Merit league match at Honiton. Playing up the slope, Tavistock absorbed some early pressure from the home side, before taking the lead after about 10 minutes. Winger Ben Neale collected a loose ball that a Honiton player had spilled when tackled and outpaced the opposing defence in a 70 metre run from just outside his own 22, to touch down under the posts. Matt Witcher added the conversion. A further 10 minutes on and Tavistock scored again. Some good phases from the forwards gave flanker Simon Palisio an opening to force his way over for a second try. The conversion missed, leaving Tavistock 12 - 0 ahead and looking to take control of the game. Honiton had other ideas and came back strongly and Tavistock had a period of defending. The home side finally broke through and scored a good converted try. Following a harsh sin-binning of Simon Palisio and a separate dubious penalty decision to Honiton, half time arrived with the score at 12 - 10 to Tavistock Playing down the slope in the second half, Tavistock went straight onto the attack and it took some good defensive work from Honiton to keep their line intact.Tavistock made a breakthrough after 10 minutes of the half, when after some good drives from the forwards, the ball was moved out to flyhalf Witcher, who cut a good line through the home defence to score a fine try. The conversion failed again but Tavistock then led 17 - 10. The remainder of the match was pretty evenly contested, with Honiton refusing to give way and two minutes from time, a kick ahead by the Honiton flyhalf caused a muddle near the Tavistock line and the home side's right winger scored a rather soft try. A fine conversion kick brought the scores level and there it stayed to the end of the match. After the two big wins in their previous matches, this was a much sterner test for the team and although it might be viewed as a point lost rather than a point won.
The team take their unbeaten record to Exmouth next Saturday in another Merit league game.
