Tavistock 12 : Devonport Services 0
On a bitterly cold and increasingly wet afternoon, Tavistock entertained Devonport Services in a Merit League match.
Both teams made a spirited start and playing down the slope, Tavistock forwards assumed control at the set scrums but their backs were not able to make any worthwhile use of the ball. There were numerous handling errors in the cold, wet conditions and some good possession was wasted by taking wrong options. The visitors were winning most of the lineout ball and set their dangerous backline in action on a number of occasions, without ever managing to get through the solid home defence. After some 25 minutes of fairly even play, the home team started to play a forward dominated pick and drive game, which wrested the initiative from the visitors. Tavistock were making more of an impression on the game now and right on halftime, after a good drive from the pack, scrumhalf Josh Sutton made a break deep into the Devonport Services half and put in a good kick into the corner. Winger Ben Neale outstripped the defence to get the touchdown and Tavistock went into halftime leading 5 - 0.
Playing up the slope, but with the advantage of the wind in the second half, Tavistock forwards quickly established a stranglehold on the game and the visitors barely got out of their own half of the pitch for the entire half. More handling errors and wrong options, coupled with some sterling defending by Devonport Services, prevented any more scoring until five minutes from time when after a series of storming drives from the pack, Tavistock flanker Paul Williams emerged from underneath a pile of bodies, to claim the important second try. Josh Sutton converted. Referee Charlie Wakeham blew for fulltime soon after, leaving Tavistock the victors 12 - 0.
All of the Tavistock forwards played their part in securing a well won victory, with flanker Tom Friend and No 8 Andrew Griffiths making a number of impressive runs. The front row of John Wakem; Chris John and Jason Ward dominated their opposite numbers and locks Steve Long and Darren Sutton were also influential.
A hard earned and deserved victory which takes Tavistock above Devonport Services in the Merit League.
