Teignmouth 8 : Tavistock 36
Tavistock got back to winning ways with a comfortable Merit League victory at Teignmouth. Tavistock swept straight into the attack from the kickoff and lock Steve Long won a lineout deep in the home twentytwo. A good drive from the forwards saw flanker Matt Cole force his way over for the first try after just 2 minutes. Tavistock continued to control the game and further tries followed from winger Ben Neale who ran in from 70 metres after 15 minutes and a second try for the outstanding Matt Cole after 20 minutes. Martin Credicott converted both to take the score to 19 - 0. Tavistock then seemed to relax and the next 20 minutes were very scrappy, with both sides guilty of numerous handling errors and taking wrong options. In the final minute of the half, scrumhalf Rob Milligan scored an opportunist breakaway try which he also converted, to give the visitors a halftime lead of 26 - 0. Much of the second half was uninspiring, with neither side getting any real penetrating passages of play together. The home side kicked a penalty and scored a try during one period of determined pressure. This sparked Tavistock back into life for the final 15 minutes and they scored 2 further tries. Ben Neale scoring his second try when he took a good mispass from replacement flyhalf Steve Luffman and with the last play of the match, Luffman put right winger Charlie Harvey in for a try with an excellent reverse pass, taking the final score to 36 - 8. In addition to the fine performance from Matt Cole, there were strong contributions from fellow forwards Darrin Cole;Andrew Griffiths and Tom Friend and Lee Easton was an influential replacement. Hooker Will Tomkins and lock Steve Long worked the lineout well. The threequarters threatened on a number of occasions, but many promising attacks broke down due to poor passing and handling.
