Tavistock 24 : Launceston Castles 14
On a raw; wet afternoon, the hardy spectatators at Sandy Park were entertained to a fine match and although Tavistock just about held the upper hand for much of the game, they were never allowed to relax by their spirited opponents. A full bloodied Devon v Cornwall contest, was well controlled by the referee.
Playing up the slope, Tavistock set off at a furious pace, with their forwards putting the visitors under sustained pressure. After seven minutes, good possession from the Tavistock pack led to a fine run from fullback Ian Gray who offloaded to hooker Tim Child, up in support, for him to score the first try. The visitors then enjoyed a good ten minute spell and had two opportunities for their speedy backs to run at the Tavistock defence and they scored two converted tries in the space of two minutes, to lead 14 - 5.
Tavistock regrouped and the forwards, once again, exerted control over the game and after 24 minutes, lock Steve Long finished off a series of forward drives with a try near the posts, which was converted by Martin Credicott. Tavistock continued to dominate up front, denying the dangerous Launceston backs any decent possession. Five minutes from halftime, Steve Long stole a Launceston lineout and from the resulting rolling maul, prop Jason Ward went over for a try, to give the home team a 17 - 14 lead at the break.
Both sides made some substitutions after halftime and the Launceston forwards were now competing more evenly with the Tavistock pack.Play swung from end to end throughout the second half with the two sides defending and attacking in turn. The only score of the half was a try from Tavistock veteran scrumhalf Paul Allen, who darted over under the posts, after the forwards had driven play right up to the visitors line. Credicott duly added the conversion, making the final score 24 - 14.
This was probably the best display from the 2nds so far this season, with all of the forwards having fine games. For once, Tavistock dominated in the lineout, through Steve Long and Darrin Cole. Fullback Ian Gray had another good all round game. Centres Nick Lane and Haydon Dibble made a number of strong runs and the whole squad defended well when the very useful Launceston team were on the attack.
