Tavistock

Tavistock 50 : Liskeard/Looe 15
In a season of fits and starts Tavistock opened their spring campaign
with a home tie with Liskeard and Looe Lions. The sun came out at last
and shone on a veritable try fest. The first game of the day started
with some end to end try scoring from both teams to quickly bring the
score up to two each - Louis Peake and James White opening the scoring
for Tavi. Some close support work and determined defence saw Tavi take
the lead by half time ( 25 - 10) with further tries from Harry Edwards
James White and Henry Varndell-Dawes. The Lions cam out fighting in the
second half and some probing runs around the tavi defence allowed them
to pull back into the game. A fierce midfield battle ensued with both
sides scoring tries aplenty. The Lions comeback was just not enough in
the end with second half tries for Tavi coming from , Louis Peake with
Harry Edwards and James White both completing their hat tricks.
The second game saw Tavi step up a couple of gears in attack and
display much improved discipline in defence. Dogged tagging from a
strong line causing several turnover balls thwarted the Lions' attacks:
sometimes almost on the Tavi try line. This coupled with some creative
phases of passing play created gaps in the Lions defence which were
mercilessly punished by the Tavi team. The Lions fought valiantly on to
the end , never letting the scoreline deter their attacks. However, The
sheer pace and diversity of the runs from supporting players; Lois
Thornton, Noah Berridge , Joe Inman , and Jack Baker, wore down the
Lions defence to allow tries from James White(3 again!), Harry Edwards,
Henry Varndell-Dawes and Tom Gardener ( with 2 apiece) and a thoroughly
deserved try for James Kenyon after several sidestepping , swerving
runs deep into Lion territory. Superb defensive work from Harry "The
Rock" Richardson swept up any breakthroughs by the Lions and capped off
a well rounded team effort.
